THE VANITY OF PEACOCKS Ink drawing on paper 30cm x 40cm In different realms of human culture peacock feathers are seen as both lucky and unlucky. They’ve been used as symbols by royalty, warriors and afflicted by the ridiculous ‘evil-eye’ concept. I have no respect for any of the above and see them as a thing of beauty which is why I wanted to make a drawing. Strange interpretations and uses of nature inflame our human tendency to show off. Which is precisely what the peacock is doing. My parents live on in my memory and the things they loved are touchstones for me. On a beautiful day in England I cannot be indifferent to the cruelty being unleashed in the world. BAMBOO BOX 35cm x 25cm Acrylic inks on paper. Making and taking inspiration from gardens has been a passion ever since my parents let me have a patch of ground to grow marigolds. The arrival of Spring is always a special time and symbolises the joy of new life. This painting is based on a box of bamboo which was a centre piece in a garden I left a few years ago but the vibrant burst of colour reminds me of the importance of enjoying all the riches of the natural world. THE ART BOOM 30cm x 20cm Acrylic paint on paper. When my primary school teacher said to me ‘you should go to art school’ I didn’t know that one day I would see the words ‘art school bombed’ as a news headline. There is no adequate level of contempt that I can express for these crimes against humanity. It’s not a case of one war being worse than any other. We fail and we fail again and again and again. There is no justification for any of them. Such ugly, grotesque acts of cowardice shame the perpetrators but really, to some extent, we are all complicit with our willingness to turn away from the abuse of human rights across the world.
